Without Health – Anything and Everything – is Nothing
( This page is lengthy, be prepared … )
We are Aerobic creatures by nature – but living an Anaerobic Lifestyle – still wonder why you have excess body fat and feel tired a lot of the time!?
Health is the most critical and most valuable resource you have or will ever have. Bar none.
Your body is the vehicle through which you ‘live’ for 70+ years, that is a very long time to be encapsulated inside an outer casing! Yet most people neglect and fail to pay attention to this most basic need. Our self imposed and society based necessity lifestyle, creates limitations and problematic situations all of which denigrates our physical bodies health.
Instead of enhancing health, too many people dump all sorts of toxic material into their internal body through their diet and through their lungs, equally bad, applying a similar toxic material to their outer layer ( skin ) through harsh artificial chemical laboratory made substances, which then absorbs internally and penetrates into the blood stream further toxifying the body.
Please note that correcting one’s health is something that anyone can do anytime by taking some simple actions. With the assistance of a Health care professional, this process can be sped up exponentially and in the 20+ years I have spent in the Health & Weight Loss industries, this is exactly what I have done.
What is Health Coaching?
It is helping people to experience a very natural state ( state of body and emotion ) – that modern living prevents from being able to be fully experienced.
Optimal health is defined in medical dictionaries and in books and on the web as different things, but ultimately the same thing, which is – in simple terms ‘energy’.
When the body is at or close to 100% of ‘efficiency’ across all the systems of the body then a dynamic takes place in the Nervous system that results in a surge of new energy that you and I would feel as something akin to when we were in our early teens and just had the energy to run bout all day, not need much food and get by on limited rest etc…
As 20, 30 or 40 years go by and our bodies naturally slow down, this is made worse by our lifestyle’s ( bad diets, little or no activity / wrong activity, stress etc… ) that compound the ageing process – faster!
What most people call health is actually a weak version of the true state.
This is the basis for optimal health…disease originates from anything that is nerve draining consequently, health stems anywhere where nerve energy is efficiently used.
Society lives in the false belief that you are either sick or well, healthy or diseased. In reality there are a lot more states and stages than just 2! health and disease live together on a continually changing scale.
Real / true health is a state few people get to experience. Or a state people only get to feel in snippets throughout their life. Health Coaching is a means to getting people to this place in the first instance and then keeping them there permanently in the second instance.
Having more vibrancy, more passion, more oomph, more kick, more energy, more get up and go is what people crave and wish for, in reality however they barely make it through the day and run out of fuel too quickly. Sadly health is something most people do not nurture and they pay the price for this, every day of their lives.
You must keep a check n balance on your own Nervous system. When people say he / she is having a nervous breakdown, it is just a metaphor, it is not literal. However it has an element of truth because your Nervous system supply’s every other system with energy, much like an entire building is dependent on its generator to supply everything.
When a muscle fatigues for example it is not the muscle itself that creates the situation, it is the nerve supply – to that muscle – that breaks down. The human Nervous system is a very easily fatigued system and must be protected.
Conserving nerve energy – is of ‘paramount importance‘ if – you want increased health and energy levels. Thus all actions for our purposes mentioned in this page are all geared toward that very outcome.
Why Don’t People Look After Their Health?
That is a difficult question to answer definitely. There are of course many reasons and many answers. I mentioned at the beginning that most people neglect and fail to pay attention to this most basic need and I would argue that at its most basic root, the cause is simply that people do not ‘value‘ their health.
The problem is that when you were born, your body was already there!
You didn’t have to do ‘anything‘ to get it. Thus the value, of what you truly had, was already disguised.
You were then fed, washed and cuddled for many years, as time passes you become a pre teen then a teen then an adult. At no point ( or very rare ) is there a time where we are taught ‘how precious and valuable our bodies are‘. Of course we were told intellectually from time to time in different ways growing up but I mean ‘where and when was it made a point of direct study or part of society’s collective appreciation’?!
In other words, people take for granted – that their body is there, and ( foolishly ) assume it will always be there, and will digest their food for them, heal the injuries and fight the infections! If you had to put your tuppence of effort in to assist these processes, I wager that people would then value their health ( and look after it ) just a tad better.
Even with a poor diet and no exercise your body will still exist and function ( albeit at a lower quality of existence ) and so therein lies the problem – you don’t have to do anything proactive – and you will still have a body.
So you can begin to understand that the problem in not valuing one’s health is not purely one’s own fault. Well meaning parents, genuine friends etc… simply played their part in the chain as they themselves were brought up the same way. Then you were introduced to the world of advertising and sadly further health denigration took place as nicotine, carbon monoxide, tar, acid ( alcohol ) and ‘other’ toxic substances including processed / junk food were absorbed.
The list goes on…
What Actually is Health?
In its most simplistic term it is energy.
An abundance of energy is the measure and the key to / of better health. When health is optimised, you will experience an increase in physical ( and often Emotional ) energy levels …
Health is also a mental parameter too. People often neglect to remember this. Mental health is as important as physical health.
What is mental health? Some definitions may be someone who is Emotionally balanced, who copes with stresses productively ( eustress instead of being distressed ), who has few if any blocks, someone who resonates inner peace etc…
So when considering health remember it is not just a physical, it is also a mental state.
For our purposes here it is primarily the physical plane I am referring to. With that in mind, know that Certain actions create health in the first instance while other actions increase health in the second instance.
Health is not just having a jacket potato instead of chips, it’s not playing tennis twice a week, it’s not drinking diet coke, instead of regular coke! and it’s not just eating your 5 a day fruit & veg!
First of all, you need to understand that health is not a ‘have’ or ‘don’t have’ thing. If you’re alive, you have health. If you have a disease, you still have health, but clearly less. Health and disease live together: we live on a constantly changing scale between the two.
(a disease by the way just means the body is not at ease / dis-ease. ‘dis’ is just a prefix for something considered to have or be a negative connotation)
So eating a jacket potato instead of chips or consuming lots of vegetables may push us one notch further in the direction of health, absolutely YES, but, ‘having’ that jacket potato or ‘consuming’ healthy food does not in – and of itself – ‘create’ health.
So How Do You ‘Create’ Health?
It is not done by some weird and peculiar actions that you must follow, or by eating never heard of before foods, or practicing some bizarre rituals etc… It is actually and surprisingly based on very simple principles and methods that the public simply are unaware of for the most part.
The answer is along the lines of what you probably already know. However – it is the subtle differences in actions that make the largest differences in your body!
Exercising in order to accomplish health improvements is different to exercising to improve fitness. Eating to improve health is different than eating to improve fitness.
Nutrition is very important and relevant but, it is not number 1 on the list. This is often where people go first / only when addressing their health issues.
People for example believe that ‘food gives them their energy’, and that their energy levels are dictated by the food coming in. This is true, but also false!
When you eat a sandwich, and that sandwich gets broken down in to its smallest components and enters your blood as nutrients and calories, it travels to various tissues to provide energy. This energy is what allows an eye to blink for example, or a heart to beat, or the liver to function, or the bone to produce marrow etc…
It is NOT the type of energy I am talking about here on this topic. Not the type of energy people are craving in their daily Life.
I am referring to the energy you almost ’FEEL’ at times. When you have had limited rest and food and yet you are bouncing around all day still! Where did that energy come from??
Have you ever gone to do some exercise on a near empty stomach for whatever reason by choice or circumstance and during the session you notice at first how lethargic you feel, yet, miraculously, 30 mins later you finish your exercise and 2 things are prevalent : 1 is you don’t feel hungry anymore! And the other is that you feel more energy now, than even when you started! ( I know there are days when this doesn’t happen, but has it ever happened to you? )
Well we know you didn’t eat during this time so that verifies that the increase in energy that you now ‘feel’ was not the result of calories / food coming in. Other than bore you with the chemistry of this, suffice to say, a more important nutrient came in, in abundance … Oxygen during the session and consequently created these 2 results.
Conversely have you ever been hungry ( and energised! ) and eaten a sandwich. 30 minutes later you actually feel more tied and lethargic and now have illogically less energy??
In the exercise example the body received the number 1 nutrient it needs to survive, more important that food or even water! Oxygen – an abundance of it – is the catalyst to virtually every single process that happens inside your entire body.
In the sandwich making you feel tired example calories coming in lowered your energy levels because your chemistry changed, having no food in your stomach increases oxygen levels in the blood, hence your increased energised state you experience when you are hungry. Once food / calories fills the stomach the chemistry changes and oxygen lowers and so does your energy levels.
SO, when I talk about your energy increasing I am not referring to more blinks of eye or a faster heart beat or an over production of bone marrow. I am referring to the type of energy that you feel, when you have those days where your energy levels are super high for no apparent reason, when you bounce about as if you’re on drugs! This energy cannot be eaten.
Food provides the raw material to give your body the energy to function ( just ) through calorific energy.
Oxygen provides the body with ‘chemical energy’ you could say and thus the energy that you feel and want more of.
Thus the answer to increased health = increased energy – is getting more oxygen in to your body regularly – we have understood that is it not food that will accomplish this outcome of increasing energy, so how do we do this?
There are 2 ways, which ultimately, lead to the same thing :
Movement / Exercise / Activity
Deep / Correct Breathing When Not Being Active.
This duality is absolutely number 1 on your list of priorities.
Just a brief word on day to day breathing, 99% or more of the population breathe ‘shallow’, that is, from their upper chest. This is unhealthy and potentially disease producing. It is not how you are designed and meant to breathe. It may sound like such a little thing – to breath shallow verses deep yet I cannot emphasize enough here in print …
JUST HOW IMPORTANT – AND CRITICAL IT IS THAT YOU UNDERSTAND THIS FIRST, AND THEN CHANGE YOUR HABITUAL BREATHING PATTERN.
All of the neurological panic receptors are located in the chest / lower throat. Breathing from here ‘keeps’ you and your body in a part fight or flight state that has an unimaginable cascade of knock on hormonal, chemical, enzymatic and biological effects within your body. All of this is conducive to producing dis-ease with your body. The OPPOSITE to health.
The receptors located deep in your lungs, the lower lobes, from which deep diaphragmatic breathing takes place, are the ones that calm and relax your body, as nature intended all day every day – except in those fight of flight moments that also naturally come up and you must be appropriately ready for of course, but to live in this flight / fight state, even in part, 95% of your time IS VIRTUALLY GUARANTEEING ILL HEALTH AND LOW ENERGY to say the least.
If the lower lobes are rarely used because you breathe shallow and you don’t get out of breath when you exercise – or you don’t exercise at all! then these lower parts of your lungs become stagnant! this becomes a perfect breathing ground for germs, bacterium’s etc…
In addition, the Lymphatic system is ONLY facilitated in 2 ways… 1 being muscular movement and the other through DEEP diaphragmatic breathing. Shallow breathing does very little to affect the Lymph. Lymph is the fluid that surrounds every single living cell in your body.
It is the fluid that the cell excretes some of its toxic metabolic by products in to. IF the lymph does NOT effectively drain away that toxic material – it absorbs back into the cell as it has nowhere else to go to!
The Lymphatic system does not have a pump. Your circulatory system does, it’s lucky, we call it the Heart, but the lymph system is without any such function. Only the 2 aforementioned ways can the lymph be stimulated. Deep breathing is again vital for this.
A lot more to say on this but I hope you get the point. In essence – learn how to – and then practice – some form of deep diaphragmatic breathing exercises every single day. Why do you think Tai Chi, Yoga, Mediation and other Arts ALL focus on deep breathing! … it is not coincidence!
Then there is the exercise side of getting oxygen / increased levels of oxygen into your body. Specifically, it is ‘AEROBIC‘ activity that is the fundamental key to health. Everything else, including nutritional changes, are secondary.
Aerobic simply means ( for our purposes here ) to have sufficient oxygen flowing through your blood. No activity at all means not enough oxygen flows. Anaerobic activity, means not enough oxygen flows. Poor dietary habits in general means not enough oxygen flows.
Only Aerobic activity and correct breathing accomplishes this sufficiently.
Once the Aerobic activity is locked into a person’s lifestyle, then nutrition can be tweaked to reflect further health improvements. Again might surprise you to know that the number 2 of most important factors that effects one’s health is not a calorific based factor, ie: Proteins, Carbohydrates and Fats. They come 3rd.
What comes 2nd is a nutritional factor yes but not a calorific element. I will leave you in some suspense for now as to what that is!
Interestingly, when most people attempt to increase their health, traditionally, one of the first if not the first, and if not then the ‘only’ place they look at – is their diet. Statistics and data reveal this and it is therefore not surprising why health improvements seem to delude people who try or, any health improvements are minimal.
They are missing the first and most important step. Better to get your activity right and then look at your diet, in that syntax. I recommend this for all of my clientele and have done for over 20 years now.
When you have a strong state of health ( created primarily by correct aerobic exercise ) your physical body will experience an awakening! a surge of Energy, of Vitality, of Passion, of Vibrancy emanating through your being … Quite a feeling.
Through emotional re-balancing, physical activity-aerobic exercise, food, fluid, proper breathing and sunlight, health can be restored or improved.
What’s the Problem?
I have an extensive career in the health industry ( please see bottom of page for information ). The premise of starting the company ‘Easy Health’ was to teach and show people that improving health was actually very easy to create and not complicated, more so however I wanted to show that this thing we call health is a totally different reality – to fitness.
You see – the industry I grew up in was then / and still is to this very day called the ‘Health n Fitness‘ industry as I am sure you will be aware. This title bugs me big time. What is my beef with this seemingly harmless title?
It makes a presupposition that is the underlying cause of a lot of health problems, in that health and fitness are in the same title and related much more than in reality – where as they are not. Yes there is clearly overlap from one to the other, improving a fitness parameter will automatically have a knock on effect on health and improve that and vice versa.
BUT – it’s a big but – in the real world people neglect to see / understand that there is a difference.
From this lack of acknowledging or recognising this difference, comes all sorts of strange bizarre self-concocted training regimes that people create – and – consequently the injuries, illnesses, burn out’s occur, not to mention the other layer in that – people just don’t get to accomplish their set goals …
Lots of people decide to lose weight as an example, yet they train under a fitness oriented regime instead and yes lose ‘some weight’ but not all, then they cannot maintain their ‘difficult and demanding’ training so they stop, and the minimal lost weight – usually comes back and sometimes a little bit more even over the years. People who yo yo weight lose are classic examples of this scenario.
They begin a drastic un-maintainable diet and training program that they cannot keep going for long so they have to stop – and the weight they lost – just comes back again. As a result the body resets the calibration of the metabolism to protect itself from subsequent shocks and so the weight instead of going down over the years, actually, can go up!
Health is More Important Than Any Fitness
You want to run faster or longer? You want to play tennis better? You want to ski better? You want to swim further? You want to lose some weight? … If you do not invest in Aerobic activity then your fitness efforts will always be partially wasted and you will not be able to fulfil your potential in the fitness arena.
Am I making any sense here? I’m trying to show that people – society as a whole – mostly / not all but the majority of people put their fitness before their health and it creates a cascade of problems, or at least is an incredibly inefficient way to be / do / live on a regular basis.
I can tell you without any doubt whatsoever – the people who neglect to take care of their health first and foremost, are the same people who experience / get injuries, illnesses, yo yo weight loss, wear n tear, ‘middle age spread’, drop in libido, drop in everyday energy, medication dependence, age quicker than they should etc…
Fitness Without Optimal Health – Can NOT be Optimal Fitness!
Health is a different type of training / exercise to fitness training. Health needs to be thought of as the base layer. The roots, the floor, the grounding. Once that is in place, then – only then – a second layer called a fitness improvement of some sorts / run faster / longer, lose body fat / weight loss, increase endurance etc… can be placed on top.
Imagine not having the base ( health ) or in the real world that health base is weak – fragile – delicate – not reliable, how long does the ‘push‘ for the attainment of the sought after fitness improvement last – before the injury occurs? or the burn out set’s in? or the heart attack happens in the seemingly ‘healthy’ 40 year old playing tennis!!?
Would you build your home from scratch, on a known ‘collapsible piece of land’? … hardly!
As I started by saying health is a very important topic that is ‘not understood’ by most people. My mission is to change that. Remember :
We are Aerobic creatures by nature – living an Anaerobic lifestyle! – that is the big problem for us as a society and living in the modern world. As a species we have stopped doing what we inherently use to do = MOVING ( moving AEROBICALLY regularly )
How Do You Know if You Need Health Coaching?
Let me ask you some simple questions :
Are you generally feeling lethargic and weak during the day?
Are you looking to Increase your energy levels?
Have you put on weight and you want to lose that weight?
Do you feel stiff or have aches around your body / for no apparent reason?
Do you want to feel flexible and agile and have more mobility and suppleness ?
Do you feel tired sometimes? too often?
Are you in your 30’s, 40’s or 50’s and you now feel different – a lot different! than you did say in your 20’s?
Do you want to have that alertness you had back in your 20’s?
Do you struggle to have the energy each day to stand or work for reasonably long periods?
… IF your answer to the above questions is mostly yes then I would surmise that your current level of health can DEFINITELY be IMPROVED.
If you’re not sure, then ask ‘yourself’ the question :
“Are these states described in these questions – the standard I am willing to except for myself, my body and my Life when there are much higher levels that are accessible to me?
The questions I asked you about your health represent ‘some’ of the many symptoms and effects of poor health.
Unfortunately, most people’s standard for health is something resembling those questions believe it or not – whilst it is by no means ideal – it IS the accepted norm for most people.
Because most people have never or rarely experienced a true state of health in their body so of course, they don’t know any different!
The above example questions are, in part, effects of having a varying degree of toxic / sticky thick blood flow that is therefore low in oxygen ( as it cannot absorb the oxygen correctly / fully ) and as a result creates a lowered immunity and is caused mostly by ingesting poor food stuffs and liquids over time, direct toxicity through medications and inhalation of tobacco and either not moving / exercising or not moving correctly ( exercising for fitness improvements at the expense of health is common, and a big mistake! )
Blood flow should be free and fluidly, allowing for a full saturation of the blood of large quantities of oxygen via the haemoglobin in the red cells without hindrance.
I just want to clarify that here on this page on this site, I cannot write every detail of everything as you can appreciate because it would be so long that you probably wouldn’t get around to reading this so I am cutting some things short.
I am fully aware for example that some ‘conditions’ are genetic, that not every health ailment is just because of toxic blood, that there are more factors contributing to health than ‘just’ aerobic movement and that some situations, because of their nature, don’t lend themselves to simple approaches either.
What I am talking about is most people, most of the time, in the western modern world we live in, with the lifestyle imposed upon us, current health problems previously described are the sum result of no or wrong exercise, poor diet and poor habits in general from posture to sleeping patterns.
These are the people, and this is where, my service has its value.
Summary of This Page
Health is an abundance of energy. Nerve and chemical. It is created, primarily, by correct Aerobic activity, and correct non activity based breathing, performed regularly. This is the foundation, the roots.
These roots ( just like a plant in soil ) also require a constant supply of clean water ( for a human it is ideally from whole, fresh, organic fruit, vegetables and salads, if not then direct from distilled water ).
Thus water is the second most important health requirement.
After this ( oxygen and water ) is taken care of, a correct nutritional based dietary intake needs to supply over 90 essential nutrients, daily. It must heavily include Antioxidants and Anti-inflammatory nutrients.
If a cell is supplied with an abundance of oxygen ( Aerobic activity and correct non activity breathing ), kept clear of its own metabolic waste products ( enough cleansing solution is supplied = water ) and supplied with an array of over 90 nutrients, then that cell, thus the organ it makes up and the system it belongs to, will have strong health.
Rest, relaxation, exposure to sunshine and a correct sleeping pattern all contribute to finishing off the parts, to the whole, we call health.
The biggest cause ( literally at it’s beginning point ) of virtually all disease, is now identified as chronic inflammation.
This is caused when a free radical ( an oxygen molecule that has lost a single electron ) will stick to a cell / tissue. It has been referred to as metabolic velcro! Over time, when ‘enough’ of these free radicals stick to that cell or tissue, that cell or tissue becomes ‘oxidised’. This leads to and creates inflammation.
Acute inflammation is healthy, normal and well handled by the body, but our modern lifestyle creates an unlimited number of excess free radicals in our daily life, that then become potential inflammatory triggers and so most people live in a constant ( chronic ) 24/7/30/365 state of being internally inflamed.
When a cell is inflamed, it cannot operate correctly. Eliminating toxins from the cell becomes impaired, absorption of oxygen, water and nutrients also becomes limited. You can work out for yourself the next long chain and cascade of negative events that will take place. When individuals create more free radicals in their body, then their body can cope with ( neutralise ), their nervous system along with these cells all suffer and you have a dis-ease in your body.
Who Else Can Benefit From Health Coaching?
– People who have recently been through / or still going through a major illness / disease.
– People who feel that their current level of health needs to be improved – for whatever reason.
– People who feel tired too much of the time / day to day and they know this is not right.
– People who can’t seem to lose all the weight they want or keep the weight off long term.
– People who get lots of injuries or illnesses – more than they should.
– Anyone in their 30’s, 40’s or 50’s who feels they need a drastic MOT of their health and lifestyle.
– Anyone in the business world who needs to have an abundance of energy to accomplish everything from a Successful day at work to a rich home life and more.
– Anyone wanting to learn more about real health.
My client’s typical complaint is that they are just too busy in their lives, to give serious attention to this area, even though they want to. My job as a Coach then, is to inject health into their lifestyle, so that there is little or no disturbance to this. Yet health improves. Not easy but can be done. This is my skill set.
Other clients feel perplexed that they eat ‘right’, exercise daily and generally do the ‘right’ things yet have such low energy or constant ailments. It is fascinating to see the contrast between people and how they all have slight variations of usually a similar thing. In reality when you look at their actions under a microscope you can clearly see all the things they do that only has a minimal effect on their health despite their input.
It is not uncommon for me to just have to ‘tweak’ some things to redirect their effect from slight improvement to vast improvement. Much like 2 arrows shot at only 1 degree difference, after 10 feet they are together, after 1000 feet they are 15 feet apart! Small distinctions – that make a large difference.
Other clients are simply overweight, don’t exercise at all, are maybe living with a disease of some sorts and generally need a radical kick up the behind to see any noticeable changes. Still, my job as a Coach is to direct them toward a measurable improvement in their level of health. This requires a lot more than just a tweak!
Whatever the situation, my role is to step in, and tinker with things to make the health engine closer to 100% efficiency rather than where it is, at close to just right now 15%!
My 25 Year Career in Health
I started studying health back in 1985, I began my academic studies in 1989 and qualified in 1992.
I then started work as a Personal Trainer in 1995 as a freelance and then added working in clubs from 1996. After 10 years of Personal Training I decided to take what I was already doing as a PT – which was helping people with their health and weight loss Goals – and put these into new companies that specifically and only would do this.
So in 2006 I created a company called ‘Easy Health‘ which had the tag line ‘Health – made easy‘. My goal was to show people that health was indeed easy and not a complicated matter they had been led to believe, I also wanted to emphasise that fitness was a very different experience to health and thus any action taken needs to be health based not fitness based as I saw this first hand for over 10 years as a common mistake virtually everyone was making.
In 2007 I expanded and started another company called ‘Easy Weight Management‘. This was purely for women only who were desperate to be thinner and lighter and more shapely. It was a company based on weight loss and weight management. This was followed by opening a membership based ( not gym ) club in St Albans, Hertfordshire in 2008.
In 2011, 5 years after starting Easy Health, I decided to expand and diversify, so I became a private health Consultant in the public arena. From the exposure and Success there I had the good fortune in 2012 to move into the private realm of VIP health Consultancy, which is where I mostly work to this day.
