Do you struggle with this? Okay, only you and 7 billion other people then!!
I’m talking specifically about in the context of Weight Loss = Fat Burning and the whole ingredient list of exercising, the mind set required, Lifestyle changes as well as the dieting.
What is Motivation?
I mean we hear the word a lot, but do you actually fully understand what it is / means? If you don’t then by understanding it a little deeper, it will allow YOU to be MORE Empowered in this area, make sense? So let’s delve in to what Motivation IS so that by better understanding it, we may actually USE and APPLY it…
Motivation is a Duality of Inspiration and Desperation.
Motive by itself is defined as ‘a reason for doing something’.
When Emotion is added to the motive i.e. you are ‘Inspired’ … or you are in a state of ‘despair’ … then the motive itself – transforms – in to ‘Motiv–ation’.
Meaning the motive is now ACTION-ED! because you have added Emotion ( Energy linked to motion = E+motion ) to a motive.
Did you get that?!
When you are motivated – you are driven, you are going to move heaven and hell in in order to make something happen. This is very helpful when attempting to change your weight wouldn’t you agree?
If you are struggling to get yourself motivated in any context – then you need to add the emotion of inspiration, meaning get INSPIRED by something, focus on the PLEASURE it will be bringing you or, operate from the Emotion of despair, meaning, when you are moved by the PAIN that something causes you. You will then have Motivation.
The most Powerful Motivation is when you have the carrot and the stick driving you / propelling you at lightning like speed in the direction you want to go. Inspiration is the carrot in-front of you teasing you and the stick is the Desperation whipping your ass from behind…
Let me give you an example…
If OK magazine phoned you tomorrow and said …
“Hello Casandra, we would like to do a full cover story on you for our readers, we will be over in 16 days to take the photo shoot, goodbye”.
Tell me out loud – would you just carry on as usual, ‘unmotivated’ and plodding along, or, would you SUDDENLY find an IMMENSE amount of buried capability and resources, and with these powers you would probable find the ‘time and energy’ to carry out exercise correct?!
Actually – you would probably exercise 3 x every day!!!!! What about your diet? You would probably starve yourself for the WHOLE 2 weeks AND keep to it despite extreme hunger and difficulty, am I correct?
The POINT is that given a healthy dose of ‘Consequence’ and have that STICK in your mind every minute for 2+ weeks, creates this thing we affectionately label MOTIVATION.
KNOWING that 100,000’s of people worldwide would be looking at YOUR body, semi naked, would terrify you right?
It would also be SO EXCITING and DREAM LIKE that you would have a rather LARGE carrot and a rather LONG stick to propel you forwards 120%!
You should know that you inherently have all the resources you need to both Successfully lose weight and keep the weight off permanently, right now inside you. Even with limited knowledge and experience, you could still potentially pull it off.
The reason you don’t, is not that you can’t, rather that you have not tapped into those resources. Primarily because you don’t have the need in place first ( yea you want the weight loss BUT HOW BADLY!!!!!! ). It’s not about can you it’s about will you! WILL YOU comes back to the Motivation or the lack thereof.
Make the stakes high enough, press the right buttons and you would make something happen right!
So if you are missing this vital ingredient then you need to seriously ‘find’ some.
HOW you ask?
There are natural and thus predictable periods of the year when your Motivation levels will rise, and will fall :
In December some people begin to exercise and diet in preparation for the work xmas party! And or for the New Year – same reason. They need to ‘fit’ in to their clothing!
Then January comes and people then make resolutions don’t they, and they stick to them for a day – a week tops. Then go back to being lazy and careless.
Then April / May comes and some people begin to diet and exercise in preparation for the upcoming Holiday in the Summer, knowing those pictures will be taken is enough to get them taking action NOW! So they diet and maybe workout.
On holiday in July / August people usually relax a LOT and ruin their body ’somewhat’ with no activity and LOTS of food. Pictures are taken and looked at when they return home, they are HORRIFIED to see their bodies and again diet and maybe incorporate exercise in to a period of focus to change their body back. After a month they relax again get caught up in things, 2 months go by and we are back to around the November period we started at.
Does ANY of the above describe you or similar? Maybe you don’t adhere and fit in to all the periods in the above year, everyone is different so will the periods they fall pray too.
Firstly, knowing that you ONLY react because there is a trigger, may make you realise that you have little if any control and while that is not an attack, it is inherently a negative and this in part is holding you back / down. Tying you to a limitation with handcuffs.
Do you want to be someone who JUST reacts like everyone else? Do you want to be robotic? Do you want to have your buttons pressed by someone or something else instead of you??!?!?
Secondly it shows you that YOU actually DO have the capability and resource to Commit, and that your limitation is not a lack of resources – but the ACCESS to those resources when you need them as mentioned previously.
Do you understand and see the difference?
So how instead can you create the Motivation Consciously, at will, so to speak?
You need to create pressure on yourself.
Either from the good ( reward ) or the bad ( repercussion ) or both.
Committing to OTHER PEOPLE around you about your body weight changes is one way, take this to social media so that even more people know what your commitments are is even more useful. Only the brave will do this. Do you see how this would keep you on track verses just having you look after you since there is little or none outside Consequence?
What’s another way to achieve this? Can you think of any?
In the short time I have your attention here for I cannot give a long lecture on psychology as most people already shy away from this sometimes ’uncomfortable’ topic and so I am attempting to create balance with that but still mentioning it.
My overall aim is to raise your Conscious Awareness of this. If I can begin the ball rolling, then I hope to instigate a response from you to keep the ball rolling. To think about this critical area of Motivation and how YOU can find a way to take advantage of it.
If you’re getting married in 3 months, it’s easy right – you will be in shape no doubt about it. But you can’t get married all the time!!
You could get in shape for your holiday, BUT you can’t go on holiday all the time either! So what CAN you do as a constant?
One way we have already covered is to raise your Conscious Awareness, remember that topic. This will go a LONG way to achieving this outcome, but sadly as mentioned, akin to getting the ball rolling, it won’t KEEP it moving by itself.
Maybe one way is to take your HEALTH seriously. At least more seriously than you currently do.
I mentioned that this course is not Health improvement oriented, that that would happen automatically anyway as a positive consequence. What I am saying is outside of this course, on the whole, in your WHOLE Life, making Health a priority would go a very long way to accomplishing your desired weight goal and shape.
Imagine if HEALTH was in the top 3 of your Life’s priority’s. Your moving toward values list as such.
If absolutely EVERYTHING was filtered through the concept of Health – every single thought you ever had in your mind, every single feeling your ever felt in and through your body, every single action ( behaviour ) you ever took in the external world. Would things change?!?!
Do you see how your Weight would automatically factor in to ALL that? Do you see how your body would AUTOMATICALLY thus change over time?
Prioritising Health would be a Significant step in the right direction, to achieving initially a Weight reduction AND then Managing to maintain that result for a long time / Permanently.
Of course your Health would improve too! ( just mentioning the bloody obvious to see if your paying attention!! )
How Then Do You Make Health More Important?
I have Coached many individuals who suddenly had a heart attack in their daily Life one day. I got the call to attend IMMEDIATELY and so I turn up while they were still in the hospital. Do you know what often happens next? Something akin to a miracle! Not the physical / I am recovering type miracle, no I mean a mental miracle!
This individual is transformed.
THEY, not me, THEY tell me, how they are going to immediately change everything in their Life around to fit around the centre thing of Health that they will now value!
They go on to tell me that the ‘PAIN’ they went through was SO great, SO unbearable – that it SHOOK them up like nothing they ever went through before ( they say ).
That they will ‘NEVER’ go through that again. This is called Leverage.
This person invariably goes on to be Healthier and does not have a heart attack again. What’s informative is the fact that it sadly took something of immense proportions to get them to change. YOU don’t have to wait for such drastic events to happen ’to you’.
But do know that if you don’t find a way to make a change happen then Mother Nature WILL find a way – to MAKE you. Trust me! Do you get it? Don’t mess with Mother Nature, she has a nasty temper!!
Don’t be a statistic – if you are currently very over weight do something about it TODAY.
I care about you. Genuinely. Just because I don’t know your name or what your face looks like, does NOT mean I cannot STILL care deeply. I have a deep caring nature so for me to know that ‘you’ are struggling and maybe suffering in your Life with something I KNOW I CAN help you with – MOTIVATES me and my communication here is very genuine.
FIND A WAY – however you do it – to get leverage on your self – to push the thing called Health – that you already know is important but is maybe low down on your priority’s when it comes to the real world – up higher on your values list.
Once this happens – the automatic action / reaction consequences work in your favour – and effortlessly ( Magic! )
If it’s not Health that you decide to prioritise to create Motivation, then think what else you could do to find leverage on yourself.
Do you have young children? Do you have any concern for them growing up around you? Knowing that you may eat too much not train or train regularly and that your body is not in terrific shape ( from Health angle I mean not vanity )?
They WILL grow up modelling you. It’s only natural and only inevitable. IF you want the very BEST for them, maybe YOU will do something about YOUR weight TODAY?!
If not for Health and if not for your children if you don’t have any, then find SOMETHING BIGGER than yourself to commit to. To hold yourself accountable for.
Find the pain in your Life, whatever it is. This is where your Leverage will be found and waiting to be utilised. Or find the inspiration form someone or somewhere or something to MOVE you on an Emotional level.
Conscious thought effort and act can and will ONLY take you so far before your Unconscious steps in and strips you of your Power. Unless the same Unconscious sees hears and smells the Consequences.
